Custom Piñatas
With a few simple materials, you can custom design your own piñatas! Use your imagination and allow your children in on the fun! We will use the simple technique of papier-mâché.

Here is a list of materials:
Scrap cardboard
Scrap newspapers
Masking tape or equivalent
Flour
Water
Assorted colored tissue paper, construction paper, or any thin paper material

1. Put simply, you first construct the basic shape of your piñata using scrap cardboard part cut to shape using tape to hold it together. Be certain to leave hollow space inside for the candy!
2. Mix flour and water to a thin, somewhat pasty consistency. The solution should be sticky but not clumpy.
3. The first layer of papier-mâché will be using your scrap newspaper. Dip strips of newspaper into the solution until they are saturated. Cover your entire object until it seems solid and stable. Allow to dry.
4. Lastly, use your assorted papers in the same fashion as the newspaper. The tissue paper is much thinner than newpaper, so do not soak them too long. Use several layers to keep the newspaper from showing through. Be sure to use the colors you want at the appropriate places. Allow to dry overnight.
5. And that's about it! Be sure to cut a small flap to insert your candy and seal it with more papier-mâché. Attach a hook for hanging and remember: the biggest kids go last!
